The Ball Pit

I saw this video today and I have to say that I absolutely loved it. It is always a cool experience when you get to have a conversation with a stranger. It may sound a little strange, but it is actually one of my favorite things to do – talking to random strangers. In fact, I do it as often as I am able.

There is something about striking up a conversation with people that I don’t know that invigorates me in a way that is hard to explain. I get a bit of a rush when you can make a connection to someone that you have never met before.

I am usually the one to make conversation with different people. I don’t have that thing in my brain that tells me that people may want to be left alone. I’ll start by asking them a question about what they may be doing. If they respond well I keep seeing where the conversation will take us. If they give me an answer that clearly does not want a response or no answer at all, I know to leave it at that – it isn’t like I am a creep.

There was one time when I was having some food and drink at a pub in my current city and there was a guy that was also sitting by his lonesome self. Because he was looking at me, trying to figure out what I was reading, when I was done reading my comic book I asked him if he read as well. Conversation spawned from there. Eventually he came over and sat at my table until my friends arrived and I had to leave.

It is also exciting when I am working on something and the person next to me at the coffee shop sits down and starts asking me questions. He was a university student that was studying Native History of the Americas. That led into a discussion about school, what I was working on, we talked a bit about writing, and then he had to leave.

Now, some of the conversations are not always exciting. I approached a guy that was writing at the same coffee shop that I mentioned above, and the guy was a little weird. He was talking to me about how he was possessed and how when he came to he had wrote some things and how he was trying to continue. Then he made me listen to a song, that I do not recall, that was definitely not my style of music.

The point of this though, is that I do it for the experiences. I get to tell cool stories to my friends about a weird random dude, or how I met this fascinating guy that told me stuff about our history, or even tell my family, that because they were being lame and not partying on our family trip, that I went and hung out with a bunch of random people and had a blast. I guess I should be thanking my family on that one – HA!

On a bit of a more serious note though, this video is about learning from others. Sharing your experiences. And when asked questions like the ones in the video, it makes you think about your own life and what your answers would be. For me, seeing this video makes me want to go out and talk to more people and learn. I love talking to people because everyone has something, some sort of knowledge or experience that is worth listening to. Take everything life has to offer and soak it in; and use it. Enjoy life, take your experiences and share them with others. At least that is how I like to live my life.

After I saw this video, I knew that I had to write something about it and share its wonderfulness. Now if only I could have a ball pit like that.

Maybe we need a study ball pit on campuses to promote engaged learning and conversation!
